Zooms vs. Primes
Seriously?
Primes.
I’m not saying zoom lenses don't have their place, but zoom lenses should be used to tell the story with an in camera zoom. Anything else makes for lazy filmmaking.
Others may disagree, but in my experience, using a zoom as a variable prime means that you don't find the shot, frame the shot, and put the camera to where you need it to be, but rather zoom in until you like the frame.
Shooting with a set of primes means you consider the scene, decide on a certain lens as the right lens to tell that portion of the scene, and then maneuver the camera until you have it in the correct place to frame the story the way you like. You are forced to put the camera where it should be, rather than adjusting the lens from where the camera is. It makes you think much more than using a zoom lens does.
Primes. Trust me.
