From The Attendees….

“Dave attended my school, the London Screen Academy, to give a talk to my class on his creative process during the walk and talk for the West Wing. To say that during this talk I was the most valuable talk I had ever heard would be an understatement! I sat listening to Dave's wisdom in awe of his experience and talent in using the lens to convey storytelling. As an aspiring Steadicam operator, the knowledge shared will undeniably sit with me for the rest of my career, from his expansive technical knowledge to his nuanced understanding of storytelling, and even his advice on using interpersonal skills on set to create the best outcome for the story and all crew involved. As film students, we are all very aware of the difficulties of breaking into the industry but it is the generosity of professionals like Dave that will be the key to reaching our career dreams.”

Eve (London Screen Academy)

What we witnessed on the night, was an amazingly detailed accounts of the real experiences that happens when Operators do what they do. The breaking down of how it was done and what was the actual experience of the operator, with the hardship, the physicality, and the human interaction to pull it through. All aspects we rarely get to hear when we just watch and enjoy a good program.

A hugely educating experience for all levels. And on my own experience, I was so thrilled as usual, We never stop learning.”

“From Dave Chameides’ talk on the Art of Visual Storytelling, I learnt a lot about the different thoughts and emotions that go behind camera operating. I found it useful how he used personal anecdotes, and real, visual examples, in order to show us how he did certain shots, and all the small things that went towards one shot. It changed my perspective on camera operating, and actually helped me realise the different problem solving that is involved within it. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn or appreciate his great work- as hearing real life breakdowns of camera operating shows you the elements that were meant to be hidden.”

Simran (London Screen Academy)

“The masterclass was incredibly insightful. Dave dissected many scenes from his filmography as a steady-cam operator frame by frame, sharing the challenges he faced on each shoot and how he overcame them, as well as his reasoning behind certain creative decisions and his modes of communication with the rest of the crew. It was also so interesting to hear about how much Dave and Danny’s approaches differ - for instance, whilst Dave picks out many of his cues from the script, using story beats and dialogue to move the camera accordingly, Danny explained that he mostly tunes out the dialogue and goes off of visual cues almost entirely. It was truly such an invaluable experience, and it was so kind of them both to devote so much time to answering our questions, staying long after the masterclass to speak to the attendees. I learnt so much, and left the event with newfound optimism and confidence in pursuing a career in film as a camera operator!”
